Members are asked to share details of their ‘big infrastructure projects’ prior to METREX’s forthcoming event with the URBAN Intergroup – on Friday 21 January 2022 – to discuss a Metropolitan Vision for Europe 2050

A new approach to indicate an important role of metropolitan regions and areas has become a fact: after some political meetings at the EU level we now need your substantive support.

We have started working on our Metropolitan Vision for Europe 2050 and we are going to complete it by early summer 2022. We want to convince several other metropolitan and municipal European networks to become its stakeholders. We plan to present it to the European Commission – responding to the offer presented by Elise Ferreira, the Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, in Porto, in November 2021, at the EMA conference.

On Friday, January 21st at 09:00-11:00 CET, we will discuss the idea of shaping the Metropolitan Vision for Europe 2050 with the Intergroup of the European Parliament, led by MEP Jan Olbrycht. Please register here for this event.

But we want the Vision to be as concrete and substantiated, as possible. That is why we want to equip it with a proposition of an investment programme. And we’re very much convinced that such a programme should be big and ambitious – in terms of its scope, in terms of its costs and in terms of its impact.

Therefore we’re looking for projects which could fill this idea in. We would like to know from Members if you are planning or implementing big infrastructural projects, which have such features as:

  • are climate neutral and energy prosuming,
  • revitalise significant parts of existing city centres or develop some kind of new metropolitan centres,
  • are connected to some kind of climate neutral, significant, metroregional transportation hubs,
  • may be helpful in strengthening the rural dimension of their metropolitan regions and/or serve their rural areas, especially in achieving their metropolitan food sovereignty,
  • are mixed-use.

If you can just mention an idea or a name of such project – ideally before Friday 21 January 2022 – it will be very helpful for us. Please details that are available to Stephen Gallagher. Further information can be provided after this upcoming event.

Thank you to all Members in advance for their input.
