The EuroDelta Alliance: Pioneering a Sustainable Future for Europe

The EuroDelta Alliance is a dynamic transregional movement bringing governments, NGOs, academia, and business associations within the EuroDelta region together. Our mission is to actively support the transition towards a prosperous, equitable, and sustainable EuroDelta, thereby contributing to a competitive and resilient Europe. In line with our mission, we work in a strategic, forward-looking way on a sustainable development path for the region and for future generations.

The Alliance was launched in May 2025 following the signing of a letter of intent at the final conference of the Interreg NWE Project ASSET. This letter was signed by 10 partners, and the Alliance remains open to all who wish to join. The network operates as a working group within Metrex, welcoming both Metrex and non-Metrex members.

A New Geographical Reality in Europe: The EuroDelta Region

Spanning a 250-kilometre radius, the EuroDelta region (roughly forming the triangle of Lille-Amsterdam-Cologne) is home to over 42 million people and generates approximately 12% of Europe’s GDP. The area serves as a crucial gateway for goods and materials. It is Europe’s most urbanized and interconnected region. The EuroDelta is unique and is economically, ecologically, and socially strongly connected – within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt Delta.

A European Lighthouse: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

The EuroDelta confronts pressing challenges such as high emissions, significant pressure on vital delta ecosystems, and increased vulnerability to climate change and sea level rise in the low-lying delta. Critically, many broader European challenges, particularly spatial scarcity, are uniquely concentrated within this relatively small geographical area, making their resolution here more urgent than elsewhere. The governance is extremely complex due to the huge number of government layers and the political system of 4 nations.

We believe that the acute nature of these challenges, combined with the EuroDelta’s concentrated geographical position, provides the ideal foundation for the region to serve as a pilot area for the execution of spatial place-based approaches supported and inspired by European policies and programs. Therefore, the EuroDelta Alliance connects our members with Europe to work together on solving societal challenges and turning these into opportunities.

Activities

The EuroDelta Alliance employs a strategic and action-oriented approach.

Its activities focus on:

  • developing the EuroDelta narrative
  • fostering a bottom-up spatial economic strategy
  • aim for capacity building through knowledge exchange and shared innovations
  • aligning research agendas, policies, and measures
  • market development for impact-driven companies
  • advocating for place-based European policies and programs, specifically for the EuroDelta region and support of macroregional collaboration in general

In the beginning, the work of the EuroDelta Alliance will be built on the outcomes of the Interreg NWE project ASSET.

Getting involved

The EuroDelta Alliance offers hybrid meetings during the Metrex conferences and offers diverse hybrid meetings in between. Follow the newsletter of Metrex to see the agenda.
