Call for support from METREX Members to re-establish the URBAN Intergroup at the European Parliament

In July 2019, the METREX President and Secretary General met with Mr. Jan Olbrycht MEP to discuss the idea of re-establishing the URBAN Intergroup at the European Parliament.

The group, of which Mr. Olbrych is the current President, has been instrumental in raising awareness on urban-related issues in the European debate.

Mr. Olbrycht has now issued a call for support, in which he urges METREX members to raise the issue with their own MEPs.

For any further information, please contact Mr. Jan Olbrycht via urban-intergroup@europarl.europa.eu or jan.olbrycht@europarl.europa.eu.

Mr. Olbrycht will also speak at the METREX Conference in Stuttgart, taking place over 11-13 September. There will be an opportunity to discuss URBAN Intergroup with him then.

Communication from Mr. Jan Olbrycht

Dear URBAN partners,

As President of the URBAN Intergroup between 2009 and 2019, I would like to inform you that I am willing to work on the re-establishment of the URBAN Intergroup at the European Parliament in the current term.

Over the past 15 years, the URBAN Intergroup was very active in raising the importance of urban related questions in the European debate. As urban issues are increasingly important in EU policies, the URBAN Intergroup, in my opinion, should continue its work at the European Parliament.

During the last term, the URBAN Intergroup brought together 89 MEPs representing most EU Member States, from all political groups at the European Parliament and working in almost all committees. It worked with 133 official partners from the local, regional, national and European levels that represent the interests of Europe’s towns and cities, or work in the domain relevant for urban development.

I have already invited all MEPs interested in urban issues to contact my office and join our efforts to re-establish the URBAN Intergroup. I would like to ask you, as URBAN partners, to support the re-establishment of the URBAN Intergroup and let me know if you know some MEPs that might be interested in urban issues.

I will inform you after the summer break on the future steps to be taken, once the official procedure of the establishment of the intergroups is launched by the European Parliament.

Looking forward to working with you on urban issues.

Kind regards

Jan Olbrycht

on behalf of Mr Jan Olbrycht
