At the METREX Madrid International Congress in May 2006, held as part of the METREX 10th Anniversary programme, it became apparent that it would be appropriate to develop an international dimension to the activities of the Network.
The membership is now almost fully representative of all the varied social, economic, physical and environmental circumstances of European metropolitan regions and areas. The Madrid International Congress demonstrated that this body of experience, knowledge and expertise is of interest to international colleagues and that there is value to be gained for METREX from selective and relevant international contacts and exchanges.
At the Madrid Meeting of the METREX Managing Committee it was agreed to invite past METREX colleagues of high standing and experience to fulfill the roles of METREX Ambassadors to promote an international dimension to METREX affairs. It is anticipated that wider contacts will be developed with new EU neighbours to the East and South East and with Asia and North and South America.
